About us

Nearly fifty years on the same roads.

A family business, still run by the family, working the ground around Leinster.

An RM Cleary tipper and crew on site, with the paver working behind.

Michael Cleary set up the business in the late 1970s, surfacing out of Ratoath. Nearly fifty years on it is still a family business, still working the same ground, and still running out of the one yard at Sutherland.

His son Robert joined straight from school and took the business over in 2012. Daniel — a carpenter by trade — came in two years later and runs the yard at Sutherland today.

A tonne, or ten thousand

We will lay one tonne of tar on a farm lane and we will lay ten thousand on a scheme, and we would rather be asked about both. Three pavers cover working widths from 1.2 metres to 6 metres, so the machine is chosen to suit the job rather than the job trimmed to suit the machine.

The lorries are ours too — a modern HGV fleet that hauls our own asphalt and moves our own plant between sites. It is why material arrives hot and on time, and why a machine turns up on the day the programme says it will.

We take pride in the work and we keep investing in the equipment, because the standard on the ground is what people see for the next twenty years.

What we do, and who for

The work splits three ways and always has.

  • Local authorities

    Public roads and footpaths

Resurfacing, planing, reinstatement, footpaths, kerbs, ramps and lining. Work that has to be done to specification, signed off, and opened back up to traffic on time.

  • Civil engineering & building contractors

    Packages on larger schemes

Site roads, estate roads, car parks and hardstanding. Coming in as the surfacing package on somebody else's programme, working to their sequence and their dates.

  • Private customers

    Driveways, yards and lanes

Done by the same crew that did the council job the week before, with the same plant and the same standard of edge.

One crew, one standard, whether it is a county road or a farm lane.
